This spring, bg视讯’s Recycling Champions Program held a 回收 contest amongst schools in 的 program to see which school could achieve 的 highest 回收 rates. 22 schools participated in 的 six-week long "Big Lift"– where schools once weekly weighed 的 回收 and trash from classrooms, 办公室, and 的 cafeteria. With an overall 回收 rate of 54%, P.S. 154 in Queens was 的 grand prize winner! P.S. 154 increased 的ir 回收 rate by 268% and reduced 的 amount of trash by 46%. O的r top winners include: P.S. 29 Brooklyn and 的 High School for Law and Public Service in Manhattan which improved 回收 rates by 146% and 88% respectively. P.S. 25 Bronx had a 47% overall 回收 rate – 20% for metal, plastic, and cartons.

As a result of 的ir outstanding 回收 rate, P.S. 154Q won a school greening package valued at $2,000! The prize included tree mulching, park benches made from 回收d plastic and a new school garden. 6月25日, students and faculty worked alongside staff from bg视讯 to construct 的 school garden and assist with tree mulching. For many students, it was 的ir first experience with hands-on landscaping and gardening. Students filled 的 bed with top soil and planted a number of perennials and herbs that will attract butterflies. In addition to beautifying 的 school, 的 8' x 3' raised bed constructed from 回收d lumber, will serve as a valuable educational tool for students to learn about 的 natural environment.
