bg视讯 Greenmarkets are opening for 的 season throughout 的 city, bringing with 的m not only a bounty of fresh regional products, but also expanding weekly opportunities for New Yorkers to 回收 纺织品 and 堆肥 food scraps. 

In 2007, bg视讯’s newly-created Office of 回收 Outreach and 教育 began testing a program to collect 服装 and 纺织品 at Union Square and Grand Army Plaza Greenmarkets.  Tax-deductible donations of 纺织品 such as 服装, shoes and towels are collected and later sorted for 重用, or 回收d into new products such as wiping rags and insulation. We quickly discovered New Yorkers’ dedication to living sustainably and have met 的ir demand for more 回收--36 Greenmarkets now offer this service, with 10 new locations starting up this spring and summer.    

Since 2011, bg视讯 has worked to complement existing Greenmarket food scrap collections run by BIG!Compost and 的 Lower East Side Ecology Center, to meet 的 growing chorus of Greenmarket shoppers wishing to bring back trimmings from 的ir weekly market haul.  今天, in partnership with 的 NYC Department of Sanitation and community partners, 38 Greenmarkets host food scrap drop-offs at least once a week.  Material collected is transported to one of several local sites in 的 five boroughs where it is transformed into 堆肥, a fertile soil amendment for use in urban farming and gardening programs.

bg视讯 has collected more than 2.7 million pounds of 纺织品 and 2.85 million pounds of food scraps at dozens of Greenmarket collection sites throughout 的 city.  在一起, food scraps and 纺织品 comprise 23% of NYC’s waste, making efforts like 的se critical to reducing 的 big apple’s environmental footprint.
